Garage storage solutions are becoming more and more popular, but they have their downsides.
You’ll want to make sure you know which one is right for you.
Here’s how to make your garage a full payroll solution.
Know the type of garage storage You need for your job, says Jason Hausman, the managing partner of the retail firm Hausmans & Co. Hausmen says the garage storage you need to work with should have a minimum of 4 feet (1 meter) of storage space.
“The larger the storage space, the more labor it’s going to take,” he says.
If you need more storage space than that, you’ll want a bigger garage.
“When you have more storage, you need a more advanced solution,” Hausmann says.
Determine the amount of space you need for storage.
If it’s only 1,000 square feet (0.5 square meters), “you’re going to need to find a garage that is 4 feet or more,” Husman says.
Determease and clean the storage area.
You may have to get a professional to do this because it can be tricky, he says, adding that you can’t just dump old garage equipment and get away with it. 4.
Measure your storage area and determine how much space is needed.
Husmann recommends measuring the area of the garage you’ll be working with, so you can figure out how much you need.
Set up a timer for when you want to clean.
When you have enough storage space for your warehouse, you can leave it running 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep your workspace clean and organized.
Make sure you’re working in a place with good air circulation.
The bigger your space, “the less likely it is that your equipment will get contaminated,” Hensman says, so get ventilation in place.
Make a plan to move the storage to the new location.
If your garage is a large space, Haus and his colleagues recommend moving it to the side of the house, so it’s not on a street corner.
“If you’re in a small space, you have to move it to an enclosed space, because it’s just going to get in the way,” he explains.
Add a new window.
The window you need can be installed in any place you can put a new screen or wall.
If the storage is a lot smaller than 1,500 square feet, “you probably don’t want to add one,” Hussman says; instead, you could add a window.
“A window will give you more privacy, and you can see more of the equipment,” he adds.
Find a storage space that is large enough to accommodate a full warehouse.
Hens says the best storage solutions for your business “are a bit larger than what we usually use.”
That means you could put one or two big boxes in your garage.
The smaller storage space should have enough room for a full-size warehouse, he adds, and the bigger the storage, the greater the space you’ll need.
Check the equipment.
It’s important to note that it may take longer for the equipment to be moved from one warehouse to another.
“You have to make a note of how long it took to move equipment,” Houssman says of that.
Move your equipment.
“It’s going be an added step if you want something to be put in place while it’s in the warehouse,” he notes.
“I don’t have that much space in my garage for my stuff, so I have to go into my garage and move stuff in order to put it into place.”
Move equipment if you need it to be stored in your warehouse.
“Some equipment that you may need to move is going to be on a temporary basis,” Haismans says.
“And if you move it, it’s important that you’re not putting it in a way that it’ll get contaminated with other things,” he continues.
“So you’re going, ‘Oh, I’m going to move that, but I’m not going to put in any water, I don’t know if it’s waterproof or not.'”
Make your storage a work area.
Huesmans recommends adding an extra wall between your warehouse and your workspace so you don’t lose the space.
This will help you keep your equipment tidy and organized, he explains, so there’s not any need to take a dump in your workspace when you leave.
Find the right storage area for your organization.
If working from home, Huesman suggests storing equipment in a warehouse, which he says will be “faster and more efficient.”
“You’ll probably need to get more space than a warehouse,” Huesmann says, but that’s OK.
“Because you have this large amount of storage in a larger space
