Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has revealed the team’s frustrations at being forced to use tyres that don’t fit in with its current vehicle configuration.
The German was among the first drivers to use the Michelin tyres used by McLaren to take the lead in last year’s Australian Grand Prix and he admitted they were not suited to the current car.
“I can not believe we are still using the same tyres for the current race, which is quite a challenge,” Rosberg said.
“If you want to do that you need to have the right kind of grip on the car, so it’s more like a sportbike than a race car. “
“For example, the bike tires are designed for the longer races, but they’re designed for a corner, not a corner for a car. “

“For example, the bike tires are designed for the longer races, but they’re designed for a corner, not a corner for a car.
So it’s hard to change this tyre for a different situation, so the race is a bit like an endurance race.
“The tyre was designed for this kind of racing and it’s very hard to adapt the tyres for a shorter race.”
Rosberg admitted he is unsure how much of the cost of using the Michellins would be covered by the team.
He said the tyres would be used for “special occasions” but the team did not yet know how much they would cost to run in a race.
On the eve of the Australian Grand Series’ final race at the MCG, Rosberg confirmed the tyres were not yet ready for the track and he said he hoped the tyres could be put to use at the next race in Melbourne.

But while Mercedes is using the tyres, there is still some uncertainty over how the team will use them at next year’s Melbourne race.
The race will be the last race of the season for the team at the venue, with Rosberg, who has not raced since the Melbourne race in March, expected to start on pole position.
However, he is not expected to be available to take part in the race, with the team keen to see if he can return for the race in Queensland.
Rosberg’s replacement for the final race will not be announced until later in the week, with a decision expected at the end of the week.
However, Mercedes said it was hoping the team would be able do the race by the end to avoid any major delays to the season.
“The driver is very close to arriving in Australia, so I am sure he will be ready for next weekend’s race,” Mercedes said in a statement.
Meanwhile, a Mercedes spokesman said it would not be ready to use its tyres at the race until the weekend, with drivers to be used in their individual roles.
Rosberg said the team is aware of the challenges it is facing and that it is looking for solutions.
“It’s really difficult to find the right solution and we don’t know what we’re going to do until the end, so we need to find some solutions, so that we can try to get the best possible outcome for our team,” he said.
